Bernard-l’hermite : un squatteur de coquillages
Hermit crab: a shell squatter
The clothes don’t make the man

Do you see a snail running around on legs? You probably recognize a hermit crab!

But what do you know about this special animal?

Un crabe à coquille, mais pas que ! / A crab with shell, but also with…

It’s a crustacean, not a mollusc.

This crab isn’t born with a shell, it borrows it, mostly from a dead snail.
For lack of shell, some hermit crabs use sponges or small human objects to shelter.

Sedentary hermit crabs don’t have any shell.

They settle permanently in a rock hole or in an empty tube of sedentary worm.

I’m naked, I have to protect myself! I look like a crab with soft abdomen.

My abdomen is stretched and rolled up, to better fit in a shell, which is my only protection against sun and predators.

The hermit crab’s claws aren’t the same in size: there are large claw and small claw.

The large claw is particularly used to scare predators.
The hermit crabs eyes have many facets and are located on adjustable stalks: it can see the slightest movements.

There are marine and terrestrial hermit crabs.

More and more children are deserting goldfish for the terrestrial hermit crab as a pet.

It is easy to feed, it is held in the hand and it can wear unusual or ridiculous shells, made by humains.

D’une coquille à l’autre / From one shell to another
Growing up, the hermit crab regularly changes its shell as its body grows, while an empty shell remains of fixed size.

Shell swap behaviour has been observed in terrestrial hermit crabs.

These animals line up in front of a large empty shell, in decreasing size. The largest hermit crab moves to the empty shell and the others pick up the shell of their predecessor one after the other.

L’instinct grégaire / The gregarious instinct
Hermit crabs like to congregate, attracted by the same food or social behaviour.

To better protect themselves, some hermit crabs put anemones on their shell.

Thus, the anemones protect the crab thanks to their stinging tentacles. In exchange, the hermit crab carries the anemones and ‘shares’ the remains of its food with them.
It is faithful, because while changing the shell, the hermit crab removes its anemones and moves them to its new shelter!
In case of danger, the hermit crab can use its large claw to block the opening of the shell.

Sometimes you can find a hermit crab without any shell.

It can come out for some reasons: while stressed, during moulting or change of shell; it is then very vulnerable.

L’alimentation / Feeding

The hermit crab eats naturally occurring litter. It is omnivorous.

Everything suits him: dead animals, excrement, algae or plants, fallen fruit.

The main predators of hermit crabs are crabs and some fishes.

Under the sea, the female can only reproduce after moulting.
As it must avoid leaving its shell, nature has given the male hermit crab a long sex that allows it to reproduce without leaving.
In this species, the male hermit crab holds back the female with its claw. It waits for it to moult before it can reproduce.
In terrestrial hermit crabs, the female carries the eggs on its legs under the abdomen, before releasing the larvae into the sea.

The hermit crab’s body can be dull or bright, or even richly decorated with spots or stripes.
